Tamworth Phoenix are very happy to announce the appointment of Tony Athersmith as the new Head Coach of the team.
Tony is one of the most experienced coaches in Britball, with 6 national championships, 2 European championships and also having been inducted into the BAFA hall of fame.
Whilst Tony is a new member of the Phamily he has coached all but one of our previous head coaches so he has never been too far from the Nix over the course of his illustrious career in Football.
Most recently Tony was a part of the coaching staff that took the GB team to their highest ranking in 25 years until he stepped away in 2019. In the meantime Tony has been involved in football at high levels abroad taking up roles that focused on the development and mentoring of players, coaches and organisations.
President Elliot Walters had this to say about the appointment “Over the last few weeks we have worked extensively as a club to identify and secure the highest quality Head Coach to take the reigns of the Nix. We are delighted to have appointed someone of the calibre and experience that Tony undoubtedly has. This will bring a fresh impetus to the team and will enable us to kick on as a program. The future is bright!”
Tony said “I am extremely honoured to be the next Head Coach of the Tamworth Phoenix. Current process is a reloading process in the main, building on the great foundations laid out before me from Ed and Dave Winter, Jay Alexander, Ryan Baker, Martin Hilton and Jason Scott and many others, my job is to enhance the great work they have all done before me and to get us where we wish to be.
Since my appointment last week I have been focused on the immediate priories which are engaging and meeting with the current players, that was my number one priority, developing a 12 month rolling calendar so we all understand our commitments in advance and in the meantime to retain and attract high quality coaches on the staff and I am making great progress on all fronts which will allow me to soon get into the details of our other plans going into 2023 and beyond, including player recruitment.
I am focused on the culture we wish to ensure we have here at Tamworth, keeping and recruiting great high character people into the organisation that will allow us to have success doing it the right way, everyone who have met already within the orga
nisation understands the direction I wish to take us and how together we will get there. I am looking forward to getting back into week in, week out coaching and helping both our players and coaches develop into their full potential. #BeElite”
